FSC present at 5pm, talk begins at 7pm.
Cypress & Grove Brewing in Gainesville presents "Think & Drink," featuring a conversation between professor and author of the newly released book "Florida Springs: From Geography to Politics and Restoration" and Ryan Smart, Executive Director of the Florida Springs Council.
Cypress & Grove hosts a salon for sippers and thinkers, and this time it's a conversation that will explore Florida's Springs. How did Florida's political and legal failures of the past shape where we are now, and how do we move forward to restore and protect them?
The discussion will be based on Dr. Meindl's new book, "Florida Springs: From Geography to Politics and Restoration", available at a discount from University Press with the discount code FSC24 (regular price is $38, discounted price with code is $26.) Other springs related books are also discounted at http://upress.ufl.edu/fsc24
The Florida Springs Council will be available beginning at 5pm with books, springs merchandise, and answers to your springs advocacy questions. The talk begins at 7.
Dr. Christopher Meindl, PhD
Dr. Christopher Meindl is a native Floridian, geography professor, and Director of the USF’s graduate level Florida Studies Program. He is particularly interested in exploring the human-environment interaction tradition, particularly the gap between science and policy in how Florida approaches water resources. His new book, Florida Springs: From Geography to Politics and Restoration, shares a thought-provoking look at the past and future of springs protection in Florida. Dr. Meindl raises intriguing questions that will inspire readers to join the ongoing discussion about how best to protect and restore Florida’s iconic freshwater sanctuaries.
Ryan Smart, Florida Springs Council
Ryan Smart holds a Master's degree in Water Policy & Public Administration from the University of Florida, where he was honored for his environmental advocacy work as the 2017 University of Florida Bob Graham Center Young Floridian of the Year. He then served as the Director of the Florida Conservation Coalition and President of 1000 Friends of Florida before taking the helm at the newly formed Florida Springs Council in 2018. He is the only lobbyist in Tallahassee who speaks solely for Florida's Springs, and has led the Florida Springs Council through several legal challenges on behalf of the springs, including a successful lawsuit against the Department of Environmental Protection's inadequate springs pollution cleanup plans.
